North America’s first bookbinding studio opened in Boston in 1636. In Quebec, a series of factors contributed to the recognition of bookbinding as an art form: the industrialization of publishing in the 19th century; the foundation in 1942 by Louis-Philippe Beaudoin of the École des Arts Graphiques; studies abroad by Quebec binders and their participation in important international expositions.

Odette Drapeau, having trained with master bookbinders in Quebec and in Europe, founded La Tranchefile studio and gallery in 1979.
