Beginner’s course in
printing titles on the stamping press
The art of producing well-composed titles represents one of
the most difficult aspects of the bookbinder’s craft.
La Tranchefile has developed an introductory course designed
to allow students to develop their autonomy in this respect
through learning the basic rules for producing well-composed
titles, respecting established principles of typography.
The session consists in five three-hour courses with a maximum
of six students. Two students will share a stamping machine,
allowing them to carry out a number of projects. This training
is a prerequisite for open access to gold finishing facilities
at La Tranchefile.
This basic course will teach students to produce titles on
the stamping machine and will include the following steps:
1.
A detailed description of the stamping machine and its use.
2.
A description of the various colours used in stamping.
3.
Preparing a layout.
4.
Choosing a type face, finding letters in the type case,
handling type.
5.
Printing a title (spacing between letters and between lines)
and the rules governing the art.
The fee for the session of five classes is $250*, payable in
a single instalment at the beginning of the session. The necessary
material is furnished. Registration fees are taxable. Payment
may be made by cash, Interac, cheque or credit card (VISA
or MasterCard). Registration fees are not refundable.
